TEF Canada vs TCF Canada: Which French Exam Should You Take? | 2026 Guide

Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted French-language tests for Express Entry, but their formats are different. Rather than asking which exam is simply “easier,” it is more useful to understand which structure better matches your strengths and preparation.

Whether you choose TEF Canada or TCF Canada, the goal remains the same: build the French skills behind the score.

TEF Is a Family of Exams. TEF Canada Is One Specific Version.

The Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) is a family of French-language proficiency examinations administered by the CCI Paris Île-de-France. The correct version depends on why you need to certify your French.

Canada

TEF Canada

Designed for Canadian federal immigration and citizenship applications. It is one of the French-language tests accepted by IRCC for Express Entry.

Québec

TEF Québec (TEFAQ)

Designed primarily for Québec immigration procedures. CCI also notes that TEF Québec is recognized by IRCC for Canadian citizenship purposes.

Academic

TEF Études

Used to demonstrate French proficiency for admission to French-speaking higher-education institutions and certain academic procedures.

France

TEF IRN

Used in France for integration, residence and nationality procedures, including qualifying language requirements for certain residence permits and French citizenship.

Why We Make the Distinction

For Canadian immigration preparation, Simple French with Hems Inc. uses the term TEF Canada rather than treating “TEF,” “TEF exam” and “TEF Canada” as interchangeable.

This matters because IRCC specifically lists TEF Canada as an accepted French-language test for Express Entry. Precise terminology helps learners prepare for the examination that matches their intended immigration pathway.

For Express Entry or Canadian federal immigration: select TEF Canada. For Canadian citizenship, TEF Canada is accepted; TEF Québec may also be accepted for citizenship purposes.

Example Result

Speaking NCLC 7
Listening NCLC 7
Reading NCLC 8
Writing NCLC 7
English: CLB 5 or higher in all four skills

What Does This Result Mean?

You have reached at least NCLC 7 in all four French abilities. That is an important Express Entry threshold.

Potential: 50 additional CRS points for French Under the current CRS criteria, candidates with NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills and CLB 5 or higher in all four English skills may receive 50 additional CRS points for French-language ability.
What should you improve next?

In this example, reading is already at NCLC 8 while speaking, listening and writing remain at NCLC 7. Improving lower-scoring skills toward NCLC 9 may increase other language-related CRS points. The exact effect depends on whether French is listed as your first or second official language and on the other factors in your profile.

Step 1 — Tell us about your test and Express Entry profile
Step 2 — Enter your French test scores
Use the scores shown for the four abilities on your official result. For TEF Canada, follow IRCC’s current instructions about the compatible score column.
Step 3 — Add your English CLB results

English is used to check the second 25-point portion of the French bonus and compare possible language ordering. Select 0 when there is no valid result or the ability is below CLB 4.

Step 4 — Optional skill-transferability details

These factors apply to French-enabled skill transferability only when French is the first official language. The complete CRS transferability category is capped at 100 and may also include Canadian-work combinations.
